Do you ever feel lost when it comes to your career? Confused about what you should be doing? Don’t know who to trust? Are you unsure how to move forward? Or are you afraid to fail at your “destiny” rather than embrace the journey?
Do you feel the shame of failing or simply feel unmotivated? Is that feeling slowly chipping away at everything you believed about yourself and your dreams?
What if there was a way for you to get that motivation back, to re-ignite your passion? Wouldn’t it be great to feel happy, content, and grateful for where you are in this moment?
You can get some of your emotional and mental wellbeing back, find a renewed sense of self, and feel good and not worry. And it’s much easier than you probably realize. If you wanted to change your career trajectory right now, what do you think would make the biggest difference?
I’ll tell you…
It’s getting crystal clear on your dreams. It’s understanding and determining your “why” for pursuing this career. So ask yourself.
Answering this question may take some time or it may take no time at all. Maybe you’ve always known the answer. But, no matter what, it should feel a bit scary. If it doesn’t scare you, check in with yourself and ask, “Is this the biggest dream I have or can I dream bigger?” Dare to dream BIG. Now is the time to give yourself permission to be honest about what you want most for your career. It is okay for you to want what you want, no matter what that is. Use your imagination and think of your most audacious goals.
Once you’ve admitted you want what you want the next step is to make it as concrete as possible. Get specific. It’s one thing to say I want to be a series regular and another to say I want to be a television series regular for a multi-camera comedy on NBC that runs for 9 years. Take the time to write it down. Make a list of everything you’ve ever wanted to achieve in your career.
Remember your dreams are here to help you grow, so setting an easy goal for yourself will not serve you well in the long run. An audacious dream will keep you going, during the inevitable career challenges to come.
Remember, actor-comedian Tiffany Haddish, who rose to critical acclaim for her performance in the comedy film, Girls Trip, who won a Primetime Emmy Award for her work as a host on Saturday Night Live, and is the second African-American woman to win a Grammy for Best Comedy Album? Well in 2008, Tiffany Haddish was homeless and living in her car. Her sketch comedy partner at the time, Kevin Hart, realized she was homeless and gave her $300 to buy herself a hotel room for a week. But more importantly, he gave her one piece of advice. Get clear about her goals, write them down, and start working toward achieving them. By 2018, Tiffany was starring in a movie with him. This is the power of getting specific and visualizing the reality you want to create.
Before I ever worked with clients, I transformed my own life, which first began with getting clear on my dreams and what I truly wanted out of life. I moved to LA knowing I wanted to act. And, that was it. It wasn’t until I clearly defined what that meant for me that my career started getting real traction. Because I knew exactly where I was going, I could then take the necessary actions to get there.
How would defining your dreams make a difference in your career? What would that type of clarity mean for you?
For me, it meant a renewed sense of myself. I finally understood why I was waking up in the morning. I began to feel the apathy and lack of motivation slowly dissolve away. Because I’d found my “why.” I’d found the reason why I was going to make the effort again. It was what kept me going. I no longer felt like I didn’t know what I was doing. I was now focused and inspired and willing to try again. It was the smallest piece to my career transformation that made the biggest difference. My dreams are still what I revisit daily to keep me moving forward. Your ‘why’ never goes away and once you define it you will use it over and over again.
Once I clarified my dreams I was able to feel good again, my motivation returned, I began to enjoy the journey. Everything just got a little easier because I was clear on where I wanted to go. And I want to support you to do the same. I’m here to help because I believe your dreams matter.
